Devils battle Franklin, but fall in third straight

欧洲杯竞猜Standing at 3-7 in league with only two games left to play in the regular season — Davis High girls basketball is dangerously close to missing the section playoffs for the first time in eight seasons.

But you wouldn’t know it by the way they’re playing…

In a 59-45 loss on Friday at Franklin — the No. 2-ranked team in the Sac-Joaquin Section — the Blue Devils dominated the stat sheet.

The locals out-rebounded the Wildcats, 47-38, including 28 Davis offensive boards.

And after committing 25-plus turnovers in each of the past four games, DHS coughed up just 16 turnovers while forcing 19 miscues from Franklin.

“At the end of the night, as long as we compete, that’s all us as coaches can really ask of them,” said head coach Heather Highshoe.

Compete they did, putting up 71 shots on the evening — Davis’ second highest total of the year. But just 16 shots fell for the Blue Crew, who fell to 13-12 overall.

“I thought overall we played a pretty complete game,” Highshoe added. “We just hurt ourselves with fouls there early on.”

Five Devils rode the the bench with two fouls in the first half, and the Wildcat guards took advantage, shooting 16-19 from the charity stripe to build a 36-20 halftime lead.

欧洲杯竞猜“Again we were trying to play catch-up and we just didn’t have enough time,” Highshoe said.

欧洲杯竞猜A trio of Franklin guards handled the majority of the Wildcats’ scoring — Rena Sy led all scorers with 18, Reba Sy added 15, and Malia Clark bucketed 14.

For Davis, Skylar Schouten led the way with 12 points and nine rebounds and Surina Beal contributed 11.

As usual, Mara Bledsoe was a force off the bench, adding 8 points (all in the second half) and 10 boards.

“Mara’s just a beast inside,” Highshoe told The Enterprise. “Her strength, her size, her physicality, it goes pretty unmatched against any one of our opponents.”

The sophomore is fifth on the team in points per game with a 5.1 mark, and pulls down 4.2 rebounds a night.

The Devils — who lost their third straight — outscored Franklin (22-4 overall, 10-0 league), 25-23, after intermission, but could not get within double digits.

欧洲杯竞猜On Monday, Davis hosts another local powerhouse as No. 1 ranked McClatchy (23-2, 10-1) comes to town at 7 p.m. for a non-league bout.

欧洲杯竞猜“Anyone who pays attention to basketball knows what kind of team McClatchy is,” Highshoe said. “For us lately it’s just been a matter of executing our stuff better and focusing on what we can control.”

欧洲杯竞猜The Metropolitan Conference leader won the Speck Tournament in early December, and since then has been on a tear. The Lions come to town on an eight-game win streak, and recently avenged their only league loss with a 46-45 victory over Laguna Creek.

McClatchy beat Sheldon by 40 earlier this season, and ripped Elk Grove for two 30-point wins.
